Dr. Jeff Arhns

Sidney, Fort Loramie 

After earning his doctorate from The Ohio State University College of Optometry, Dr. Ahrns began his career with Primary EyeCare Associates in 1981. With over four decades of experience, he has developed a strong expertise in disease evaluation and treatment, with a particular focus on glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Dr. Ahrns takes pride in providing exceptional patient care, utilizing cutting-edge diagnostic technologies, and working alongside the skilled and compassionate team at Primary EyeCare Associates.

A dedicated member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association, Dr. Ahrns is also actively involved in his community. He has contributed to numerous local organizations, including the Sidney Lions Club, Fort Loramie Kiwanis, the Fort Loramie Community Service Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the GYM Committee, and the Board of Directors at the Arrowhead Golf Club. He is also actively serving on the JTD Hospital Foundation Board and is on the Golf Course Rater Committee for the MVGA. 

Outside the office, Dr. Ahrns and his wife, Debbie, cherish time with their two children, Alyson and Caleb. Alyson is a senior public relations manager in Manhattan, while Caleb attends DeBusk Medical College in Knoxville, TN. Debbie, now retired, was an Early Intervention Specialist for the Auglaize County Board of MRDD and continues to share her passion by teaching junior golf and volunteering with autism support organizations. 

Together, Dr. Ahrns and Debbie enjoy traveling, playing golf, spending time with their horses, and making lasting memories with family. 

Dr. Denise Welker

Sidney, Troy 

Dr. Welker graduated from The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1987 as Dr. Gutman. Originally from Piqua, Ohio, she moved to Sidney in 1989 to join Primary EyeCare Associates, where she has been dedicated to providing exceptional vision care ever since.

With a passion for specialty contact lens fittings and pediatric eye care, Dr. Welker also enjoys the full scope of optometric practice at our Sidney and Troy locations. She is an active member of the American Optometric Association, Ohio Optometric Association, Contact Lens Section, and the Ohio Extension Program for Vision Therapy. Committed to community education, she regularly delivers Realeyes presentations to local schoolchildren, helping to raise awareness about the importance of eye health. 

Dr. Welker and her husband, Dave, reside in Sidney, where she enjoys golfing, knitting, reading, and attending church and local community functions. She is involved in community service, having served on the American Red Cross Board of Shelby County, as a board member of the Sidney-Shelby Chamber of Commerce, and as a past treasurer for Zone 9 of the Ohio Optometric Association. 

Dr. Karen Fortman

Sidney, Fort Loramie 

Since 1994, Dr. Karen Fortman has been dedicated to caring for the vision and eye health of her family, friends, and community through Primary EyeCare Associates. A proud graduate of Fort Loramie High School and The Ohio State University College of Optometry, she provides comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages at our Sidney and Fort Loramie offices.

Passionate about vision education and outreach, Dr. Fortman actively participates in InfantSEE® and Realeyes, volunteer programs that educate parents, children, and teachers on the importance of lifelong eye health. She also enjoys mentoring students interested in optometry, sharing her enthusiasm and love for the profession. 

Dr. Fortman and her husband, Jim, reside in Fort Loramie, where they have proudly raised their two children. She is deeply involved in her community, having served on numerous service organizations, including the Shelby County Community Foundation, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Fort Loramie Music and Football Boosters, and the Business Education Partnership Committee of Shelby County. She is also a devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. 

Dr. Scott Schwartz

Sidney, Troy 

Dr. Scott M. Schwartz has been a valued member of Primary EyeCare Associates since 2000. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in biochemistry from Wittenberg University, graduating in 1996. He then went on to pursue his Doctor of Optometry degree at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, completing his studies in 2000. 

More about Dr. Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz is highly skilled in managing a wide range of ocular diseases, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and keratoconus, among others. His extensive training allows him to provide comprehensive care to patients with various eye conditions. 

One of Dr. Schwartz’s special interests is fitting contact lenses, including those designed to correct astigmatism and provide bifocal vision. He is also credentialed to fit scleral contact lenses, which are particularly effective for individuals with irregular corneas, such as those with keratoconus. Helping patients achieve clearer vision through these specialized lenses has been one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. In addition, Dr. Schwartz actively participates in the Ohio Realeyes program, where he educates local elementary school students about the structure and function of the eye. 

Dr. Schwartz is a proud member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, and St. Patrick Church in Troy. He also serves as a board member of the Miami County YMCA. Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Schwartz enjoys golfing, attending motorsport events, and supporting his son as he races a D2 midget race car. Above all, he values spending quality time with his family. He and his wife, Alexis, live in Troy with their two sons, Brayden and Devin. 

Dr. Jacob Luthman

Troy 

Dr. Jacob Luthman is committed to providing comprehensive eye care, including prescribing glasses and soft contact lenses, as well as managing ocular health conditions such as diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. He is an active member of the American Optometric Association.

Originally from St. Marys, OH, Dr. Luthman earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University and completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. Since joining Primary EyeCare Associates in 2018, he has consistently delivered exceptional patient care. 

In his leisure time, Dr. Luthman enjoys spending quality time with his wife, hiking with their dogs, traveling to new destinations, and scuba diving. 

Dr. Katrina Schlarman

Fort Loramie 

Dr. Katrina Schlarman is a dedicated optometrist with a passion for enhancing vision health and improving quality of life. A proud graduate of Marion Local High School, she went on to earn a degree from The Ohio State University before graduating at the top of her class from The Ohio State University College of Optometry.

Committed to advancing the field of optometry, Katrina is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the Ohio Optometric Association (OOA), where she previously served as Zone Governor. Additionally, she is a member of the Ocular Wellness and Nutrition Society, emphasizing the importance of holistic eye care. 

With special interests in treating dry eye, primary care and preventative medicine, myopia management, specialty contact lens fitting, and vision therapy, she believes strongly in the power of early detection, lifestyle modifications, and proper nutrition to achieve optimal eye health. Whether through personalized care plans or cutting-edge treatments, Dr. Schlarman is dedicated to helping patients maintain long-term visual well-being. 

Dr. Schlarman currently resides in Osgood, Ohio, with her husband, Kevin, and their four children. When she is not working, she keeps busy outside playing with her children, reading, doing yoga, and trying new types of coffee.  

Dr. Eric Beigel

Sidney 

Born and raised in Sidney, Ohio, Dr. Beigel is the son of Joe and Cathy Beigel. After graduating from Sidney High School in 2015, he attended The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2018. He then pursued his doctorate at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, where he graduated cum laude in 2022 with Clinical Honors and recognition from the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society.

Dr. Beigel enjoys practicing comprehensive optometry, with a special interest in ocular disease, specialty contact lenses, and pediatric eye care. Dedicated to providing high-quality vision care, he strives to help patients of all ages achieve optimal eye health. 

Currently, Dr. Beigel resides in Sidney, where he stays active through weightlifting, biking, basketball, and golf. 

Dr. Carter Bensman

Sidney, Fort Loramie 

Originally from Anna, Ohio, Dr. Bensman graduated from Anna High School in 2014 before earning his bachelor’s degree in biology from The Ohio State University, where he graduated cum laude. He then pursued his Doctor of Optometry degree at The Ohio State College of Optometry, graduating in 2022.

Dr. Bensman is highly trained in managing and treating ocular diseases and is passionate about providing exceptional eye care for patients of all ages. His professional interests include glaucoma management, fitting specialty contact lenses, and optimizing vision for athletes. He is an active member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, and the American Academy of Optometry. 

Currently, Dr. Bensman resides in Bellefontaine with his wife, Ashlyn, and son. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, golf, and softball, as well as cheering on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. 

Dr. Andrew Roy

Sidney, Troy 

Originally from British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Roy earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Biology from Thompson Rivers University in 2004. He then pursued his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry, graduating with honors in 2008.

After beginning his optometry career in Ohio, Dr. Roy returned to British Columbia, where he practiced in the northern community of Williams Lake for six years, managing a thriving practice. He later relocated back to Ohio, where he continues to provide exceptional eye care. Dr. Roy is passionate about all aspects of optometry, with a special focus on ocular disease and pediatric care. He currently sees patients at the Sidney and Troy locations and is excited to be part of the vision therapy team at Primary EyeCare Associates. He is also a proud member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association. 

Dr. Roy and his wife, Sarah, are the proud parents of eight children. When he’s not in the clinic, he enjoys playing board games with his family, reading to his children, cooking, and staying active with hockey and golf.
